About Mia Phillips

Mia has deep roots in Portsmouth, having lived in both Cavalier Manor and Craddock. Now, she proudly raises her son in the same city, allowing him to experience its many beauties. Her fond memories of growing up and spending time with family and friends in Portsmouth have instilled in her a strong sense of community and responsibility. While she spent her college years at George Mason University, she felt a compelling draw that pulled her back to her beloved city, reconnecting her with Portsmouth once again.
With a career spanning a decade at Verizon, Mia served as a Trainer and Consultant, honing her skills in communication and leadership. During her tenure, she was an active Union member and Steward, advocating for workers’ rights—a cause she continues to champion fervently.
Transitioning to entrepreneurship, Mia established Phillips Construction, a female Minority-Owned company specializing in Residential and Commercial projects across Hampton Roads, Virginia. Her company’s work not only builds houses but also supports community infrastructure by working with Cities, Universities, Housing Authorities, and Hospitals.
Mia’s civic engagement extends beyond her business. She is deeply involved in various community organizations, including the Democratic Women’s Club of Coastal VA and the Democratic Black Caucus of Virginia. Her service on the Portsmouth Board of Zoning Appeals demonstrates her commitment to fostering responsible growth and development within the city.
Motivated by her love for Portsmouth and a desire for positive change, Mia is running for City Council to address critical issues facing her community. She is determined to combat blight and disrepair, improve city services’ responsiveness, and tackle crime effectively—issues she has personally experienced and witnessed.
Mia is the daughter of Gwendolyn and James Phillips, esteemed former residents of Jeffrey Wilson Projects and IC Norcum High School. Her upbringing in Portsmouth and her family’s legacy have shaped her values and drive to make a difference.
